Guildford to Godalming

Map Photo Photo Photo

A grey sky as five of us walked out from Guildford
Past a statue of Alice, her sister and a rabbit
Schoolgirls in skiffs, rowing along the River Wey
A bridge across the river and up St Martha's Hill.

At the church on top the Sunday music was starting
We rested a few minutes in the almost autumnal glow
A military man's grave who was once awarded the VC
We talked about who would be buried next in Westminster.

Down hill in ruddy green and sunlit woodland
We passed gunpowder mills beside a babbling brook
A place where once a Romano-Celtic temple stood
Lunched in Shamley Green where beer was good.

We walked along the Greensand Way through fields
Passed many pheasants, ponys, and a vintage car
Saw St Martha's church on a hill far, far away
Through ancient woods we almost ran to catch our train.
